Instagram Allows Users to Tag Products in Posts
Instagram has become a favorite social platform for businesses of every shape and size to publicize their products and services – and reach users and possible customers without having to make a sizable investment in advertising. Now, the social media giant has decided to allow all Instagram users to tag products in their posts, videos, stories, and reels. This feature is currently only available to users located in the United States.
Tagging products, which was once allowed only to approved creators, can be used whenever an Instagram user wants to spread the word about a purchase or discovery they’ve made – and give the makers a boost in their sales.
A Boost for Business Owners
Instagram’s plans were also developed with business owners in mind. When one of their products is tagged, the owner will receive a notification when their products are tagged.
In order to protect from negative reviews or malicious posts, the owner can choose to turn the tags from everyone on the platform on or off.
While the current program guidelines will not provide brand and business owners a kickback fee, there is an affiliate program in the testing stages which will allow certain creators the chance to receive a commission through their tagged products.
The eCommerce Feature
The strategy behind this recent move is to help sharpen, and expand, the platform’s eCommerce feature.
Launched in 2020, this offering allowed any business owner to do the following:
- create a customizable business page with online store functionality
- add product tags with a name and price that will makes their Instagram content shoppable
- complete the entire ordering process without users having to leave the app
- sell products directly from influencers’ posts
- make live presentations of products and convert customers in real-time
Setting up an eCommerce account in Instagram is relatively straightforward. You’ll have to place a link to your company’s website in your bio, and then add colorful photos and engaging content.
That’s only the first few steps, and once your store is up and running, owners will have to pay attention to the proper use of hashtags, sharing user generated content, and track success via the platform’s analytics program.
One of the key steps in finding success with your eCommerce account is deciding how to optimize your business’s name. Remember, it’s a crowded market out there – at last count Instagram had more than 1 billion users – so you need to stick out from the crowd.
