Google’s New May 2022 Core Update
Google has just announced they are applying a new “core update” beginning May 25th. The update will be rolled out over the next two weeks.
Why do I care about a Google core update? This is a fair thing to wonder, but Google core updates are actually remarkably important to how your business or brand fares in terms of search engine optimization and search result hits.
What is a Google Core Update?
Core updates are something Google does approximately two to three times year. As would be expected of the oft secretive Google, they don’t release what the core updates actually entail. Instead, they say that they are optimizing their search engine to better match the continually changing nature of the internet.
While the press releases Google gives for their updates are incredibly vague, one thing about their core updates isn’t vague: with every core update you can expect to see your webpage traffic take a sharp turn. Whether that sharp turn is up or down can be hard to predict, but here at Pink Dog Digital, we’re here to help you make the most of the new Google update.
What Do Google Updates Reward?
Google, as we previously discussed, doesn’t explicitly explain their updates. But what they do give is an explanation for the type of values they’re trying to emphasize with each update. According to Google, their updates seek to reward: original and informative content, content with complete and descriptive summaries, webpages that don’t simply copy information from sources, webpages that are conducive to being cited or used as research, and web pages that are likely to be shared or recommended among friends.
Again, Google is vague with what their update does, but what is clear is that Google is looking to have an algorithm that rewards and promotes thoughtful, entertaining, and informative content. They don’t want to reward proliferative content that simply borrows, or rephrases, content from other websites. This means it is in company’s interests to hire digital marketing firms to update and optimize their websites and content.
Google wants to have its program be at the front of the industry in terms of helping consumers find what they’re looking for. They reward websites that often produce new content, and that update often.

A few people from WebmasterWorld commented on Google’s May 2022 Core Update:
Large, 25 year old informational/entertainment/education site.
Right now trending down around -10% for a Thursday.
It’s early so fingers crossed. We have made *significant* best-practice seo and site quality improvements over the past 12 months.
35% down in traffic today compared to the same day the previous week. Rankings continue to drop.
SERPs don’t make sense, therefore expecting to bounce back, but the stats are difficult to look at.
